Ultramarines Primaris Lt.

Hard to believe that I haven't painted a Primaris Lieutenant yet, huh?  Well, let's fix that!

Fixed!

I have had this miniature kicking around for a few months now and with my current Ultramarines Primaris kick, it seemed like a good time to add one to the team. Looking for painted examples of this miniature I came across this brilliant Ultramarines Primaris Lieutenant from Tale of Painters.  It's freak'n perfect. So I aspired to try to get close to It's magnificence.

Primed.

Basecoats were the old Space Marine Blue, Corax White on the knee pad, skull and head.

Bace coated.

Macragge Blue midcoat and Guillman Fleshwash on the head.

The experiment of using the Guillman Fleshwash over a hand painted Corax White was fun, but ultimately I decided that this did look right for this miniature, so I got out the Cadian Fleshtone, Kislev Flesh and Eldar Flesh (Dry).

Midcoats.

I thought it might be fun to give this guy a bit of a stubble on the shaved parts if his head and face.  I just used two coats of thinned Nuln Oil for this effect and I think it turned out well.

Finished sans decals.

Finally I put myself through the aggravation of applying the decals. These turned out alright also. Once past that step the tufts were applied. I will clear coat this model soon, not worried about chipping so much as I am concerned about the decals flaking off with use.

Finished model.

On a bit of a whim, I thought it would be fun to have my son roll up a name for him using an Ultramarines name generator. This one is from Imperium Magazine. I haven't checked to see if this is the same one from the 8th ed Codex: Ultramarines or not, but I doubt they aren't too dissimilar. Anyway, the name he generated was Philo Vento (Which sounds like a guy Clint Eastwood beat up in one of those orangutan movies). His Hero Title is the Guardian Of Megaria. His Master-crafted Bolter is known as the Deafening End.  Fun stuff. -and it's fun to have so much character in a model that's likely to be chewed up by a Hive Tyrant or sniped by an Eldar Ranger... but here he is, done and out of the queue!

The Fallen Moon Page 12 (Art Monday)

Who doesn't love good old fashioned sequential art? This was done using tracing paper, my light box and lots of ambition. There's a lot happening here. The onlooking marine in the foreground watched the lancing of the Phantom Titan while the Tempest in front of it is damaged by a missile. Also there is a unit of Guardians over to the right that seem to lose their enthusiasm as the panels progress.

I recall that it was lots of fun to draw this. Note the inset was me trying to figure out how the heck the Phantom was piloted. It was never properly defined until the model by Forgeworld was released. Back in '97, I just had to wing it. Also anytime you see the Eldar speak in this story they'll just be saying a bunch of asorted pseudo Eldar runes. I think it works and makes them feel a bit more...alien.

Inquisitional Conclave 2022 (announcement)

Just like last year, it's time to paint a Inquisition model. Next month (August 2022) will be the Third Annual Inquisitional Conclave. Yes, we're doing it again!

The rules (more like guidelines really); all you have to do is obtain for yourself an Inquisitor miniature and throughout August, paint it up and send me your progress updates. Or you can just send a pic of the finished miniature. Whatever works for you.

You're not just limited to an Inquisitor specifically, you can paint members of their retinue to accompany the one you might have painted for a previous Conclave or any Imperial Agents your Inquisitor may requisition.

You can message me directly at neverness92@gmail.com, and send to me either pics or a link to your own blog (Instagram, whatever social media platform you prefer). -Whatever you want to do. Of course, I'll post my own updates here as well. We will kick this off on August 1st, with the Conclave itself (the post where all the final finished pics are showcased) to happen on the first week or weekend of September; I will know more as we get there. That should be plenty of time for most of us -I hope!

This kicks off August 1st! I hope to hear from you all soon!

Also happening in August, at least for those readers living in my region, the limited edition anniversary model of Inquisitor Erasmus Cartavolnus will be available at the Turkey Creek Warhammer store anniversary. * I am already making my plans to get down there to get one. Some of you might already have him, so I hope to see a few versions of him show up at this year's Conclave.

The other Inquisitor Erasmus has his third book coming out soon, which is also nice and timely as well.

*"Our Store Anniversary Celebration is coming soon! Mark your calendars for August 20-27. This is going to be nine whole days of FREE gifts, exclusive models, tons of awesome activities and more! We'll have more information soon, but save the date and we'll see you here!" -from Warhammer Turkey Creek's Facebook page.

The Fallen Moon Page 11 (Art Monday)

Here is page 11. Not sure why I went with such big panels on this page, but I am glad I did as I got to draw that archaic astropath in all of his glory. That helm is a bit of a cerebro tribute. The first X-men comics I read were right around the time of the Mutant Massacre and recall the beautifully drawn Alan Davis art from the issue where Sabortooth attacks Psylocke while she was using Cerebro. So I thought it would be fun to make the Astropath's transmission unit look like that a bit.

I like the Captain's face in panel 1 but panel 2...for some reason I totally changed Shankra's look. If memory serves me right, I think The Fifth Element movie had come out around this time and his look was sort of (vaguely) inspired a bit by Gary Oldman's character. Also behind him is another of those Breacher troopers that I have running all over the ship. Curiously, GW released a preview last week of their new Breacher models for Kill Team that are based off of the same Jes Goodwin Battleflert Gothic sketches that I was inspired by when I drew these guys back in the '90s. Fun stuff huh?

Tales From The Smoking Wyrm issue 5

The Kickstarter for Tales Of The Smoking Wyrm issue 5 has launched. Featuring art by myself and others throughout it.  And I did the cover as well.

Cover to #5

I write a bit more extensively about the cover on my art blog, as well as show all of the color variants; go check it out!

This issue my comic, Onward Retainer!, is three pages long.  In this one the party gets itself into a rather big scrap while the retainers watch on. It was a fun one to draw.

The Legion charges!

So if you haven't already done so, and you have an interest in old school style fantasy RPGS, (DCC particularly) go to the Kickstarter and get yourself a copy! I think you'll be pleased.

The Fallen Moon Page 10 (Art Monday)

And here is the first full page spread and it's quite an epic one. In fact, it took a lot of inspiration from the Epic game at the time. There's the classic Phantom Titan in the background, a few Eldar Tempests, a bunch of Falcons but taking center stage is that Viper. And originally it wasn't going to be there, but as I was working on this page White Dwarf #207 arrived in my mailbox and I was gobsmacked by this model. I still think it holds up very well, which is saying something considering that this model was produced in the old fashioned analog way ( i.e. no computer generation!) by Jes Goodwin. Anyway, it had to go into this story so I had it crashing but the defiant gunner was still shredding Marines with monofilament disks.

There is a lot going on in this scene. I think I may have been inspired by Sergio Argones' work on Groo, particularly the epic battles he would draw. I tried to make it so you could see that there's a lot of smaller conflicts within the scope of the larger battle.

Leave It To Reivers (Part 5)

The new guys, ready to join their peers.

The Ultramarines Reivers are now finished.  I finished the two models from the last post as well as added the grav chutes to the three models finished way back in the early days of 40k 8th edition.

Grav chutes added.

There's not a whole lot to tell. I will say that I painted the grav chutes on the the sprue because they are very tiny parts and this was the easiest way to paint them. After they were painted, I clipped them off, glued them to the nozzles on the backpacks.  One glued on, I touched up the unpainted areas with the highligh color (Fenrisian Grey in this case).

The old guys get their grav chutes.

And now I have a five-man squad of fully painted Reivers. This is the scheme I came up with using a  test model a few years ago, and I am happy to say I still think it holds up.

And finally, five do a squad make.

I am very pleased with this unit and look forward to expanding my old Ultramarines with some more Primaris brothers as well as finishing some of their Firstborn brothers also.  (How come I always feel like I am jinxing myself with declarations like that? )

The Fallen Moon Page 9 (Art Monday)

This is the page where they reach the "fallen moon". It's also the page where I make the biggest mistake (IMHO) of the whole project by calling the marines "Astares" instead of Astartes. Oops. I guess if this was ever going to be printed I would make some sort of effort to try to correct it, but for now, I'm just going just let it be. I picked a rather obscure Chapter of marines from the Codex: Ultramarines (40k 2nd ed): the White Consuls. Seriously, at that time absolutely nothing had been done or written about these guys, They were just a color scheme. I figured their white scheme could allow be to some neat things with contrast and shadows in the following stories.

Also, the Captain takes her hat from the hook on the back of her throne. It's not a real big deal, but going forward you'll see her wearing her hat.

The first two panels are my favorite on the page. I just dig the space battle stuff. The black Prisma color pencil that I used on the planet holds up really well and I wish I used it more.

If I re-did this page I would probably only change that last panel. When you see the next page it'll make sense why I chose an extreme close up to end this page with. But looking at just the page, I think it would make a little more sense to pull it bavk a bit and show the monitor that she is speaking into. But that's a minor thing; I'm always looking at my stuff wondering how I could make it better.

Tune in next week; it's one of my favorite pages from this whole project.
