Chaos Child (Review)

Boxtree paperback.
This is my review of Chaos Child the 3rd book in the Inquisition War trilogy by Ian Watson. This is the original version printed back in '94 by Boxtree, not the edited and censored version put out later by Black Library. This book continues the strange and dark (mis)adventures of Inquisitor Jaq Draco and his entourage, Lexandro d'Arquebus an Imperial Fist Captain and Grim the Squat.

+++++SPOILERS AHEAD++++++

When we left them back in Harlequin, Jaq and his companions had just secured the Eldar holy tome the Book of Rhana Dandra from the Black Library despite some herculean challenges and obstacles, but at a cost: Meh'lindi, the assassin paramour of Draco, was slain by Jain Zar. Nearly mad from grief, Draco is determined to use the Rana Dandra to get Meh'lindi back via temporal shenanigans.

They leave the world that the webway deposited them out on, and using gemstones popped off of the cover of this sacred book as currency, they seek passage to a neighboring systemm. They end up on a world called Sabulorb. In particular they decide to hold up in Shandibar, a city which has a spaceport. To quickly sum up, Watson does quite a bit of world building in this place, even going so far as to come up with a dialect that the locals speak. We get to see some customs with the locals as well as how the local Arbites function and of particular interest how the customs of two rival churches of the Ecclesiarchy (Oriens and Occidens Temples) function. This last bit is particularly important as the trio arrives here just as a mass pilgrimage to see a public viewing of a holy artifact is occurring. It's a well written observation of the religious fanaticism of the 41st millennium that ends in a riot with a rather unfortunate death toll. And Jaq and his companions narrowly escape having a run-in with the local Arbites.

I am going to summarize most of this as quickly as I can: A thief, a woman named Rakel, makes the unfortunate mistake of breaking into the mansion that Jaq’s team has made their base of operations, and is caught by them. They are somewhat impressed by her, and Jaq is particularly impressed by how much she kind of resembles Meh'lindi. This turns into the most extreme example of Stockholm Syndrome to be found in the 41st millennium, they force her to join their outfit. They do this by manipulating her into receiving an injection of Polymorphine and telling her that she'll go into flux if she doesn't receive regular Psychic reinforcement from Jaq. To Rakel's credit she does a fairly decent job fitting into the group and her first few assignments are quite amusing reads. But she is indeed bound to them.

Boxtree HC edition
Skimming through these misadventures in Shandibar they essentially culminate in the capture of a Harlequin Death Jester (seriously) whom they keep prisoner in their mansion basement (no really, they do). They are trying to learn where the webway portal is that the Harlequins arrived to Sabulorb from. They get this info eventually but a small ship full of Thousand Sons Chaos Space Marines stealthily lands next to their mansion and, well, shit hits the fan. They attack the mansion and although Draco's team managed to kill one, the Chaos marines capture Lexandro d'Arquebus the Imperial Fists captain and attempt to turn him to Chaos. To see how well their work has succeeded they send Lex back to the mansion to kill everyone and retrieve the book. Draco has the bright idea to put on the dead Chaos Marine's armor which changes color and shape to conform to... Draco's personality? Not sure exactly how (tzeentchian warpy stuff) but he now looks like the cover image for the first time in the whole trilogy (sans dreams and visions). There's a fight which leads to Draco removing the daemonic possession fron Lex and taking it on himself. They purge this as soon as possible. This full-fills a goal of his to make him qualify for becoming a member of the Illuminati.

Before they can deal with the Thousands Sons, the Arbites attack, and are woefully surprised to find the Chaos vessel. A battle breaks out which only gets worse when the Eldar show up. With the Arbites taking serious casualties they called in an Imperial Guard regiment that was at the space port and the fighting got even more intense. Taking the only page from the Rhana Dandra that Draco continues to care about, the party makes it's escape into the desert via a land train to find the webway gate. But in an added twist, the city is wiped out in a firestorm! A heatwave hits the planet due to the oddly inconvenient timing of the sun heating the planet up.

They race across the desert, fighting the heat, switching transport modes to camelepard. Narrowly escaping a genestealer cult, the party makes it's way to the webway. After hoping through a few more worlds, the first one is a planet being harvested by Tyranids (this was before the 2nd edition Codex: Tyranids before the process in which the hivefleets devoured worlds was properly codified, so this seemed oddly tame), and another world, Genost, in the middle of a massive civil war. A war that was apparently started by a renegade claiming to be the offspring of the Emperor. Clearly this was set up to be a subplot that would lead to a bigger story, but Draco is driven to complete his quest.

Arriving at the place in the webway that they needed to go, Draco conducts the ritual. The idea was for it to go like this:

Rakel's imitation of Meh'lindi would become sacred when Meh'lindi was reincarnated within Rakel -and when the Chaos Child stirred in the womb of the warp, sanctifying Rakel's sacrifice of herself and Jaq’s baptism of the new soul within her!

Yeah, it doesn't quite work out. The ritual works, but the sudden shock of being ripped from whatever afterlife existence she was experiencing was too much for Meh'lindi. Remember, she is a trained killing machine and despite being in an unfamiliar body she still puts up a hell of an attack. She kicks the crap out of the guys, whom she assumes are Eldar Phoenix Lords (that is what killed her after all) and while Jaq is trying to calm her down she incinerates his hand with a digital flamer leaving him in a very painful and distressed state. She flees into the webway, going to... who knows?

It's all too much for Draco who was already running off the rails. He snaps and the demon he thought he purged takes over his mind and he starts spouting out curses in Tzeentch's name. Hearing all that he needs to hear Lexandro blows Dracos brains out with his bolter. As a disembodied spirit Draco is also stuck in the webway and he watches his surviving companions, Grim and Lexandro, make their way back to the route that would return them to Genost.

  • Did I like it? I did, but the ending was sour. Like some sort of odd grind house movie that stops with a shocking jolt.  And the worst part is, the so-called "Inquisiton War" is not resolved in any way.  Other than that Draco's part in it has come to an apparantly abrupt and violent halt. The calamity befallen the Eldar and the Harlequin Man in the opening of this book isn't resolved either. But I did like reading this book. It wasn't as dense as Harlequin was and was a fairly straight forward read. Watson seemed to have pulled back from the overt sexual themes but he still managed to work in a chapter called 'Orgy'.  And yes, it takes place at an orgy.
  • Was it hard to put down? Part of it, yes. It did drag in some places but it was a smoother read compared to Harlequin.
  • Could I care about the characters? Yes. This story does a good job further developing Grim and Lexandro, and Jaq Draco also. The character I felt was the most interesting was Rakel. A largely 2-D character but one with a hopeless fate yet with so much potential. Ultimately she accepts the inevitably of her situation and agrees to sacrifice herself. Hers is a twisted story.
  • Did the writer truly grasp how the 'world' of the 41st millennium works? Ian Watson was a master of the setting, as it existed in the early 1990s. Many of the concepts he explores in these books are still canon, while others not so much. It was a bit of a nostalgic trip to revist the 40k universe of the early '90s. For example seeing Tzeenchian Space Marines before the Rubric Marines replaced them in canon. And with the return of the 'Squats' to 40k, can we maybe get them reprinted without the Grill edits?
  • Was I being talked down to? Compared to the previous books, no.
  • How predictable is this story? Not hardly. It's an odd-ball of a novel series and this installment was not an exception. Sure, Draco was a damned character from the start, but I didn't imagine him dying in vain like he did. His story is indeed a tragic one, yet, even though his body is dead, his soul was saved from Damnation in the end. Granted, as a formless consciousness destined to haunt the webway, but hey I doubt he'll be bored...
  • Do I recommend this book? Oh. Tough one. The first book, Inquisitor, can pretty much be read as a stand-a-lone book. The two sequels can not.  But if you make it through Harlequin you're pretty much obligated to read this. It's a fun read, and the last 1/3 of the book is a pretty crazy ride. But, I would say only read this if you truly want to experience the original 40k Grim-dark. Because this is definitely it. Twists within twists, goals achieved but only at great sacrifice, etc. Tbese characters, Lexandro D'Arquebus, Grim, Rakel, Meh'lindi and Jaq Draco have literally put themselves through hell and... for what? -And that is the 40k Grim-Dark! And it's a tone a lot of the early Black Library material tried to copy. Especially the short stories that appeared in Inferno! Magazine. And yet, the Black Library has treated this trilogy (quadrilogy when you count Space Marine) as something they should shun or censor.. Sure, the canon has evolved from this era, but so what? Leave this work as an artifact of It's time. Weird, dark, sometimes humorous, but wildly unpredictable. Just like Rogue Trader was!

Black Library edition.
From an interview with Ian Watson: "I did have a further Inquisition War novel in mind, because by the end of Chaos Child one of my characters was insane, another was hopelessly lost, and a third was dead, and I had come to care for the characters, so I thought I should get them out of these particular scrapes, even though in the world of 40K there aren’t exactly going to be happy endings in the usual sense, and all will remain whelmed in darkness. If I were ever to write such a book, for the sake of consistency it would really need to use the tech and organizational structures of the Inquisition, Harlequin, and Chaos Child, which mightn’t delight the games designers too much since almost 20 years has gone by in the evolution of the games." -Ian Watson

From another interview:

"I found a piece of paper handwritten by me titled “INQ 4” which must be notes for a possible sequel to Chaos Child. “M’L pregnant”, says the paper first of all. That’s Meh’Lindi, my Assassin heroine. Was I affected by Ripley of Alien? No, no, now I remember! Meh-Lindi would be pregnant by Inquisitor Jaq, from the time when they copulated devoutly on board Tormentum Malorum. Next, Yes! “Jaq’s baby kidnapped by Tyranids; Jaq contacts the Hive-Mind.”And next: “Grimm rescues” and “Lex and Imperial Fists again.” Oh I see the way this is going. And finally: “Genost = Gnostic + Genes” (what does this imply?).

Omigosh, a complete story-line! Including a heroic rescue by Grimm the Squat—whom editorial idiot vandals turned into banal ‘Grill the Tech Priest’ for a reprint of my 40K short story “Warped Stars”, just because Tyranids ate all of the Squats subsequent to my novels.

No, no, I must not even think about writing this sequel. The games designer tech priests would ruin everything." -Ian Watson

Lord Inquisitor Kyra Draxus (Part 3)

I am calling this one done. I probably could poke and peck at it a bit more but I'm satisfied with it enough to stop it here.

In the last post I had yet to paint the armor. I used Kabalite Green on it. And I decided I was happy with just that color.

The dragon familiar was painted almost totally  in Contrast Paints but I felt it needed a better highlight so I used a few standard paints on it to get it where I liked it.

I was very happy with how the bones turned out. Skeleton Horde Contrast Paint has revolutionized how I paint bones going forward. I can use Ushabti Bone and Wraithbone to highlight over it and get a great result.

And that's basically it. The only part of this I am less than happy about is her face, I think I needed to have thinned the painted I used to highlight it better, but I have decided to live with this for now.

And that's my 2022 Inquisitor, I already have next year's model earmarked. With luck, we'll see you back here at that time! And hopefully we can get Lord Inquisitor Kyra Draxus into a game before then as well so she can truly earn her place in the Neverness Rogue Gallery.

As stated in the last update for the 2022 Inquisitional Conclave, if you can have your projects done and to me (neverness92@gmail.com) by September 3rd you'll get your miniatures into this year's Conclave (which will be either on the 4th, 5th or 6th of September depending on what's happening in my real life).

The Fallen Moon Page 16 (Art Monday)

Continuing on from Page 15 we can see that the Invictus didn't take that explosion all too well. I thought all the cross-talk in panel two was clever at the time and I still think it holds up. I love a good dynamic explosion, maybe the Blind Visionary crew will let me draw more at some point?

And that poor old Astropath; we hardly  knew him. But here's Luccini

Inquisitional Conclave 2022 Week 3

 Welcome back.

It's been a trickle of project updates but a few more folks have stated that they might submit something before the deadline. I have stated in a comment that if you can have your projects done and to me* by September 3rd you'll get your entries into this year's Conclave (which will be either on the 4th, 5th or 6th of September depending on what's happening in my real life).

So, let's see what we got to show:

Da Masta Cheef has been surprisingly prolific this year, having completed two Inquisitors this year and how now has a finished retinue to accompany them. Tats in all!

Retinue finished.

I myself have made some progress on my model but haven't had the time to write a post about said progress. But it's coming soon.

Progress or... maybe she's done?

The Black Library is also keeping the Inquisitor fiction coming with the announcement of the return of Inquisitor Sabbathiel from the dead** as well as more Inquisitor focused media on Warhammer+.

Warhammer Turkey Creek Anniversary

Speed painting!

I went down to the Knoxville area to partake in the Warhammer Turkey Creek store anniversary event. It's a week long celebration of fun events (schedule listed below).  On the day I went they had a series of speed painting events. The one I took part in was a 15 minute speed paint using Contrast Paints. We got there a few minutes late and the manager was just about to kick things off when Mrs. Neverness asked him if I could still get in. "Sure!" He said enthusiastically, and in I was.

One of the painting tables.

We were crammed around two small tables with a mixed assortment of Contrast Paint, palletes and brushes provided by the store. The posting on Facebook said to 'bring a brush and paint' which I did, but I was glad that I didn't need to use them in the end. I had a lot of fun doing this event and I took some risks I might not typically take. Being under the gun to knock it out in 15 minutes was a fun aspect to it but all in all I was happy with the result.

My finished entry.

In the end there were seven of us who participated in this round. And considering the chaotic nature of the whole thing, some of these turned out surprisingly good.

Class photo!

The judges scrutinized the results for a good while but ultimately the picks were made. My Ultramarines guy came in third, a blood covered  Space Wolf came in 2nd and a Warcry guy came in first.

The scrutinizing.

Prizes were basically dives into the store goody box. 3rd place got one pick, 2nd two picks and 1st got three picks. It was like lanyards and post cards and stuff. I picked a pack of Kill Team objective markers since we can actually use those. But the prizes were not a big deal, it was just all good fun and I got a marine mini out of it which I thought was very cool.

Swag!

Talking to the winner he showed me some of the techniques he was using with the new Contrast Paints. It was some interesting stuff which convinced me to pick up some more  Contrast paint before I left. We were allowed to keep our miniature, but if you didn't want to the ones left behind were going to become ornaments for this year's store Christmas tree. The winner volunteered his model for the tree after he finished taking some pics of it. So if you go to this Warhammer store this holiday season you just might be able to spot it.

The winner!

The 2nd place winner was a really friendly guy and he clearly had fun making his Space Wolf miniature* look caked in drying blood. Apparently he does most of his army like this as he likes to think that his Space Wolves tear into their foes in an extremely violent manner.

Of course, as I stated last month, my main reason for coming down here was to get that Inquisitor model. I have him ordered and will have to come back down in the near future to pick him up.

This was the schedule of events, which if you're  a local would be a lot of fun to take part in all of it. It's a 4 hour round trip for me so I had to pick the day I thought would appeal to me the most. Here's the schedule for the sake of prosperity:

The Prize Is Futility

 Battle report time!

"Let me at 'em! Let me at 'em!!!"

Da Masta Cheef and I were able to get another game in and this time we didn't have anyone else joining us, it was just our two Space Marine armies. Cheef brought his Silver Drakes and I brought my original, or as the kids today call 'em, Firstborn, Ultramarines. My Ultramarines were led by an Inquisitor since it's Paint an Inquisitor month here at the Hobby Chronicle I felt the need to put one into action.

The cards of fate.

Once again we used the cards and we pulled The Prize for our goal and we got a Cyclone for the Twist. That Twist (minus one to Strength if attacks are more than 18" away) would have a significant impact on this game.

1,000 points of 'Firstborn'.

1,000 points of 'Primaris'.

The old ghost town of Toxicwasteville. One of the reasons I was OK with us changing gaming venues (the old venue was fine but air-conditioning is a massive plus) was a change in scenery. Too many of my battle reports literally appear on the same table. This table we set used old west buildings, stones, ruins and roads that have definitely never appeared on either of our blogs before and it's a nice change of appearance. Clearly our two forces are going to be meeting at high noon in this old ghost town for a show down over 'the prize'. Whatever that is. Probably some sort of archeotech.

The old ghost town of Toxicwasteville.

Cheef won the roll off and got the first turn. I played a Ruse card during set up that got three units positioned to basically start me out on The Prize. But no one wins this game unless that have The Prize at the end of Turn Five.

Ambush!

The board was set, and you can see forces aligned against each other.

Set up.

One of the Drake's star players was to be this guy, Lieutenant Warmonger.

Lt. Warmonger.

Here's another of Cheef's units.

Here's another pre-start pic. The red marbles represent the deployment zone edge. You can get a good sense from this of just how far forward the Ambushers are from the rest of the force.

At the start the action was definitely going to be in the center of the board. With The Prize being the object of the whole game, how could it not?

After a spattering fire was peppered at my force, I did lose a few models here and there. As troubling as that was, I was more alarmed at how dismal my dice were rolling. Usually they tend to be fairly average but right off the bat my penchant for rolling 1's was back with a humbling vengeance. Amazingly my unit wasn't outright killed by Cheef's successful charge, two guys stubbornly refused to die where only... actually none of his fell.

Smiting from the Chief Librarian and the Inquisitor finally took out two of them, but I had no choice but to commit a second five man Tactical squad into melee. Along with the Inquisitior himself.

The Whirlwind eliminated a Reiver.  And the Vindicare Assassin tore some wounds off of the Primaris Lieutenant but he had some relic that allowed him to shrug wounds, so he was still very much alive and kicking and continuing to sheppard forward a mob of Hellblasters and a unit if Primaris Veterans.

Turn Two and the meat grinder in the middle grounded on. The Reivers moved up, eager to get on the action. The howitzer thing moved to get a shot at the Whirlwind and did some light damage to it. I had the Librarian and the Tactical squad he was with jump the Reivers, and despite my horrendous dice rolls I still managed to eliminate all but one of them.

"Gosh they have scary masks!"

Turn 3.

The body count continues to climb, at least on my side of the table. Even with Armor Of Contempt giving me an advantage against the Primaris Bolt Rifles I was still botching Saves almost every time I rolled for one. On the other hand Cheef made a surprising amount of them. Another roll I made was my Veterans charge into the Primaris Veterans.  Of course my Captain failed his charge and I was out of CPs. My Vets performed poorly with what few hits made it through being saved by the drakes.  It wasn't going to plan at all for them...

"Charge!"

Yup, stuck out in no man's land with a full squad of Hellblasters lurking behind those rocks, the Captain could only watch as his bodyguards ran forth towards their senseless deaths.

"Um...guys?"

The Ultramarines Vets were beaten down, and the Captain was vaporized. But all was not lost. The Inquisitor had grabbed the Prize and withdrew from combat. The Librarian and his accompanying Tactical Squad had finished off the terrorifying Reivers and had now positioned themselves in a way to try to shield the Inquisitor.

Strategy in a time of gloom.

Cute though those tactics were, nothing was going to stop Cheef's hot dice, especially when mine were so, so bitterly cold. The Primaris Vets charged the Tactical Squad in the street, and wiped them out! They consolidated into the Librarian who struck one down with his Force Axe.

My turn 4, and I was running out of stuff to do. The Whirlwind was taking  damage and not reciprocating likewise. Again,, Cheef was rocking his saves. The first Tactical squad, reduced to just two guys, gave chase to the Primaris guys and got them locked in melee. And after four rounds, the Vindicare finally dispatched Warmonger the Primaris Lieutenant. The Hellblasters had wounded him earlier but the Vindicare only had eyes for the Primaris Lieutenant.

"Take that one in the heart!"

What I needed to do was get Inquisitor Hiser the Hisarion into some cover or out of LOS to win this thing.

But at the Top of Turn 5, the Hellblasters brought him down!

Inquisitor Hiser the Hisarion falls.

The Librarian fell also, botching his saves as well.  With no one near the objective to pick it up, it was now stranded in the dust outside of town.  The Librarian fell in the Fight Phase due to some amazingly bad save rolls from me, leaving me with very little to do in my turn but try to get in a few more kills.  I had the Vindicare dive into the Hellblasters, who, quite hilariously, beat him to death (he had two Wounds left, he had to make two saves and I rolled a 1 for each one!).

Well, at least he looked good dying...

The Sergeant from the second Tactical Squad was still holding on. He and the opposition's Sergeant were now locked in combat, neither gaining the upper hand. It's likely he was so focused on this fight that he was oblivious to the fact that his side had lost and that he was now it's sole survivor. Along with a damaged Whirlwind.

Determination.

And here's the view from Cheef's side of the table with their foe  swept away. And yet we end this fight with an official tie as neither side was holding the objective at the end of Turn Five.

"We have assumed control."

Fun game. My dice rolls were definitely on the low side, but mostly when a Save was required. And the opposite seemed to hold true for Cheef. I am considering moving these archaic miniatures of mine over to Horus Heresy where they will likely perform better in that meta. (God, did I really just type that?!) Granted, my die rolls can be flakey regardless of the game being played so that might not matter in the end. I do have a desire to paint up some more of the first born models I have for the Ultramarines.  And I have been working on some Primaris guys as well that I think are turning out nicely.

Cheef's dice were definitely hotter than mine which allowed his strategy to work as he intended. He was even able to hold a unit in the backfield to protect his gun turret. It was well executed but he failed to get The Prize in the end, but he was willing to accept a draw if ment I did win. Plus he got the satisfaction of vaping an Inquisitor.

Inquisitional Conclave 2022 -Week 2

I wish there was a miniature of this model by John Blanche. Anyway, welcome back to the Inquisitional conclave. Some progress updates by our contributors so far:

Da Masta Cheef has completed one miniature so far,
Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Tibadaux

He has a retinue in progress as well, but more importantly he has finished another Inquisitor also. Da Cheef has been an active hobbiest this season.

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor Wezley Sharlz Vinderthoff the III

At first I misread "the III" as "the ill" and I couldn't help but to wonder what foul warp affliction Da Cheef was making this guy suffer through...

Over on Devos IV Zzzzzz was whipped out a Throne Agent with a bit too much Xenos influence. And an impressive and esoteric retinue to accompany them.

All is not as it seems...

And I made some progress as well on my model.

Lord Inquisitor Kyra Draxus WIP.

Over on Twitter danvers-rfw started a Show Me Your Inquisitors thread that has some interesting miniatures that I think you should check out.

And that's all the updates for this week. I might not have an update next week as I will be heading to the "local" Warhammer store to order the store anniversary Inquisitor model. It's always a bit of a day trip to go down to Knoxville.

Meanwhile if you wish to have your Inquisitor join the Conclave there is still plenty of time to contribute.
