Space Wolf Scouts (Part 3)

I finally decided on a scheme that I wanted to try on my Space Wolf Scouts I thought it would be interesting to paint them in a sort of fusion of the current paint scheme that GW uses and the early Advanced Space Crusade scheme.

Fenrisian fusion.

Below are examples of my early '90s Space Wolf Scouts painted to match the schemes presented in White Dwarf magazine circa 1991-1992.

Scouts from the early '90s.
In lieu of experimenting on my Shadow War Armageddon Space Wolf Scouts I opted to try it out on this long abandoned Scout. He was abandoned because I was not happy with the way the paint job was turning out at the time. Since then ("then" being around 2004) he has been knockeb about and chipped rather badly.

Before any touch-ups.
I simply tightened up the existing scheme by touching up the chips, recoloring the chest aquilla and painting Chaos Black on the gun. Since this is an experimental model I saw no crime in experimenting more with the gun's color scheme. I painted it in the typical Dark Angels scheme that I enjoy using. I have always wanted to see how it would turn out if I were to ink over this scheme. So I figured "what the heck" and washed it with Dakka Green. I decided this was strange and not dark enough. So next I tried the old and original Citadel Green Ink over this. The resulting color seriously popped out and was way too distracting.

Gun experiment.
I was not sure it was me or not so I asked a few friends for their opinions. After getting their input I ultimately decided that this was not going to work for what I was going for so I chose to abandon this. Shame too, because it really is a striking result. Perhaps if I ever wanted to paint Dark Eldar in a green color?

Fixed Green.
I went back to my Dark Angel scheme for the green Heavy Bolter. I also attempted to paint a 5 o'clock shadow on his face using Nuln Oil.

Back to Dark Angels Green.

I painted the left shoulder pad in Sunburst Yellow over Fiery Orange and then added the red fang icons.

Left shoulder pad.

All-in-all I am pleased with how this model turned out and how this scheme is working. Next in this series I will be applying this to the plastic scouts.

Space Wolf Scouts (Part 2)

Progress continues on my Shadow War: Armageddon Space Wolf Scout Kill Team. In the first part of this series I showed a painted example of the late Rogue Trader era Space Wolf Scout paint scheme. The iconography at this time had the scout pack markings as being red on white, colors one would not typically associate with covert operations. But then the scouts from that time were just weird (puffy shirts, moon boots, etc.).

Current basecoats.

With these guys I just dove into base coating them in a typical scheme close to how we often see these models painted. But I keep looking back on those older minis and thinking that I like the brashness of it all; the 'in your face' fearlessness of that attire. And I ponder if maybe it would be cool to just paint them that way for the hell of it. Granted I wouldn't go all the way with it (no white gloves or green boots) as over all I think that scheme can look a bit too "rhinestone cowboy" for it's own good. Anyway, I am weighing all of this 'out loud' per se to hear if anyone has an opinion on the matter before I go crazy with this...

Space Wolf Scouts (part 1)

Shadow War Armageddon has given me the excuse I needed to finally get my Space Wolf Scout project started. I have been using a set of old metal Scouts with my Wolves for years, but I was never terribly passionate about them. Especially the actual Space Wolf sculpted ones with atrophied and/or flayed looking arms (seriously, how were those ever approved for production?!).

For my Scout Kill Team, I put together 3 plastic Scouts, and with a reluctance to hack up any Scout parts in order to have a Meltagun and a Plasma Gun, I decided to incorporate these two old metal Space Wolf Scouts into my new Kill Team -for now anyway. How their paint jobs turn out will determine their fate. The other metal scouts are going to get bumped over to the Ultra Marines as I feel that they will work better over in that army.

Space Wolf Scout Kill Team.
During the building of the Shadow War Kill Team list I also came up with names for the scouts. From left to right, we have the Scout Sgt Magnus Stormborn, Scout Ulf Blackstone, Scout Rolf Krakentooth, Scout Gunner  Tryggr Thunderclaw, and Scout Gunner Gunnar Murderbreath.

Magnus Stormborn was a fun model to construct. I used the marine arms from a mix of older Space Wolf sprues. I positioned the arms a little bit high on the torso so that the top of the shoulders just passes the top edge. This gives the illusion that they are more like the shoulder pads on the arms of the plastic scouts.

Sgt. Magnus Wolfborn.

Having stated that, I am still tempted to put at least one paldron on him in the spirit of the first Wolf Scout Sergeant I painted back in the '90s.

"I'm not a Space Crusader, I am an Advanced Space Crusader!"

However if I do do that, I think I'll pass on giving him white gloves...
