Chaos, Confussion and Calamity (Battle Report)

We all got together at the local gaming location to a ga.me of the Old World. "We" being myself, The Bob and Rob. (The host of long lost Murl' Workshop blog from aeons ago).  Rob had just finished updating his goblin horde to 25mm bases and was eager to finally play the game. He wanted to have 2000 points of Goblins vs. 1000 points each of a combined force of whatever Bob and I decided. We went back and forth before finally deciding on Chaos.

I have been tinkering away on Tzeentch Daemons since the Holidays and finally had enough  basecoated to make this happen. I figured this would be a good shake-down game to try them out.

Gobo deployment.

So this was a bigger game than we usually play and with all the craziness happening I just failed to take good notes. As a result this report is actually more of a summary. A "highlight reel" in a sense.

Turn 1

The forces of Chaos surge forward, Moon Head was able to put Daemonic Vigor onto the Chaos Knights which would help them soon.

Chaos surging forwards

One of the Night Goblin spellcasters was able to smash the Chaos Knights with a Foot of Gork spell. This was followed by three Goblin Fanatics spinning their way. After all of that, only two knights were left alive but they did not panic.

Left flank movements.

Turn 2

The Screamers declared a charge and one of them was wounded on the way in. Much to my disappointment they failed to deal the damage I thought they would and were wiped out by the Spider Riders!

Well, it felt like a good idea...

The Squig Hoppers and the Chaos Warriors had a major fight in the woods, with the Warriors coming out of the woods victorious.

Hoppers vs. Warriors.

Turn 3

The Chaos Knights and  the Chaos Chariot are charged by a massive brick of Goblins.

Engaged!

It didn't go as planned for the Goblins who lost and Fell Back In Good Order only to be caught by their pursuers, thus becoming engaged once again.

Re-engaged!

The Blue Horrors get charged by the Squigherders and five of them are burnt up with Stand and Shoot. The Blue Horrors win the combat which causes the whole herd to basically explode doing some damage to all the units within 9"! Although this "explosion" didn't wipe out any other units it did put some hurt on most of them.

BTW, who needs cards when we have tons of free Post-its?

As expected, the now "counting as charging" Knights and Chariot wiped out the large Goblin unit that they were engaged with and now set their sights on the large unit that the Goblin leader was skulking in.

Turning their attention to their next victims.
Turn 4

Out came the Fanatics. Most of whom tore into smaller unit of Chaos Warriors on foot, completely destroying the whole unit!

The Brimstone Horrors charge the Spider Riders, taking a wound on the way in from Stand & Shoot. I had hoped to just tie up the Spider Riders, but to my complete surprise they broke them and ran them down!

Brimstone Horrors proving their worth.

The next two pics tell a visual narrative of what happens when a pair of Fanatics pass through a unit of Blue Horrors:

Before the saves...

After the Saves.

Turn 5

With a lot units still in the game and getting entangled in melee, the most notable thing that happened was that a block of Goblins charged in and finished off the Blue horrors, who had been ripped apart earlier by the Fanatics. As you can see from the pic below, the Blue Horrors made their saves, it was the Combat Resolution and the resulting Daemonic Instability that kicked them back into the Realm of Chaos.

"Make four 5+ Ward Saves!"  :Ha! made them!" "Ok, let's add up the CR..."

it was getting late and we decided to call it here. It was a grueling fight, but once the numbers were crunched, this is how it turned out:

Chaos:  767
Night goblins: 403

Not a bad show for Rob's first game of TOW and with another round or two he could have easily closed the gape. To quote Rob when it was all over: "I can play more games of this!"

And we will!

The Blue Horror Picture Show (Part 1)

Classic Blue Horrors.

What do you do when you thought you had 20 mint condition Blue Horrors sealed in blister packs but you only actually have 12?

12 metal Blue Horrors.

While handling these blister packs one of them randomly opened spilling forth it's contents into the fresh air for the first time in 30 years.  So I figured I would just go ahead and paint them up. I used Contrast paints on them:  Asurmen Blue and Skeleton Horde.  That's it. Ok, a dot of yellow on their eyes, but really, that's it. They are battle ready and don't look half bad.

Even Tzeentch protests industrial pollution

Okay, so back to the numbers challenge that I started this post with:  I am short six models. I really want a big 20 model horde. Well, trying to fill that difference with second hand miniatures from eBay is proving to be quite a challenge, both physically and financially.

So I tabled that idea and went ahead with working with the plastic set that I have. These are awesome models also, plus they also come with Brimstone Horrors.  Building them was trickier than I imagined they would be,  but I really like them a lot.

Plastic Blue Horrors, primed.

They have a few more details such as flames and jewelry items that will make them a little more time consuming then the metal ones above. But time is something I am out of so maybe I can get them done in another post?

Coming up in March: A return to 40k, and back to doing some art. I hope you'll come back to see it then!

The Pink Horror Picture Show

Following the Screamers, it was time to focus on some Core troops for my Tzeentch Daemons of Chaos army.

Pink Horrors!

These guys have been kicking around in my collection for years, with each edition of 40k or WFB coming and going, as were their rules. These guys used to split into Blue Borrors and then into  Brimstone Horrors. This is no longer the case in The Old World, and now you just take each unit as it's own type. Kind of a shame really as I loved the uniqueness of that mechanic.

These Pink Horrors are the mid-90's versions. One way to tell is that they all have faces stolen from the classic California Raisins commercials and their finger tips have claws instead of tubal openings.

Screamer Pink

The first layer of paint (that wasn't primer) was Screamer Pink

Carroburg Crimson.

Then a wash of Carroburg Crimson was applied across the models.

Pink Horror.

Naturally I had to use Pink Horror on Pink Horrors so that was the next color.

Titillating Pink

As bright as Pink Horror is, it pales in comparison to my 30+ year old vintage Citadel Color Titillating Pink.  After all of these miniatures were colored, well, they more 90% done.

Mostly done.

The Standard Bearer model was a bit more exotic and required the most attention.

So sassy he needs his own post.

I tried to make his thorns appear a bit more wicked by giving them a violet luster.  He has feathers and I colored them using Asurmen Blue.

Finished!

Here is the champion, I spent way too much time stewing over how to paint his punch dagger. Ultimately I decided to make it seem like a  boney kind of protrusion.

Finished Champion.

Once all the Pink Horrors were done I added grass tufts to their bases and their movement tray. This turned out well, and it almost seems like a seamless piece, which has always been my intention.

The moment of completion.

Okay, here's their glamor shot. Hopefully I can get the rest of their Chaotic buddies completed soon and we can see them on the tabletop spreading mayhem and horror.

Glamor shot!

Screaming for Vengeance

Screamers of Tzeentch.

The first unit of my Chaos Daemons for the old world have been completed.

Primed.

To get this scheme to work I had to take a watercolor approach and paint this from light to dark.

Volupus Pink Contrast Paint.

I started at the extremities (assuming these fiends truly have such a thing) and worked the color toward the center thinning the color as it goes. Volupus Pink was the color of choice foe this first step.

Sigvald Burgundy

Next Sigvald Burgundy was blended into the areas where I stopped the Volupus Pink and expanded into the unpainted area.

Luxion Purple

Luxuon Purple continued this blend but it was used more as a transitional step before I got to the dominant color of Asurmen Blue.

Asurmen Blue (on the bottom).

Titillating Pink highlights (on the top).

Yellow was used for their eyes. The yellow I used was Imperial Fist Contrast Paint, which is a great match for the classic Sunburst Yellow Citadel Color paint from the last century. I used a Micron for their pupils.

A few final touch-ups, mostly highlighting the boney bits, and I was happy enough with them to call them done.

And with that, they were done. The final step was to glue them to their flight stands. Note that the flight stands are NOT glued to their bases. The idea is that I can switch them out from these square bases (rectangular technically but you know what I mean) to round ones.

Finished models.

And the first unit of Tzeentch daemons is done! What next?

Daemon Prince Changer of Ways (Part 1)

Here's a Tzeentch Bolt of Change out of the blue horror for you:  a miniature from the Realm of Chaos era of the late '80s: The original Greater Daemon of Tzeentch,  the Changer of Ways. This isn't the original packaging or a lead miniature, this version s the (circa 1995) GW US pewter casting and packaging.

Packaging prison.

And before you guys all yell:

...haha, no, it belongs on my modeling table. In fact it's been in the queue since the end of  Warhammer 40,000 7th edition when the plastic Lord of Change came out. That model definitely dwarfs this thing.

Freedom!

But I thought it might be cheeky to take some of the plastic bitz from the LoC kit and outfit some of them onto this old model. It wasn't long after that the edition changed (WHFB had gone through the End Tmes not long beforehand) and this project was forgotten about.

Until now.

But before I go into that, I do want to stress that there were a lot of versions of this model. In fact it had three bodies,  six heads (seven if you consider that one of those heads was double-headed) and two tails. There are lots of combinations possible with these bitz and it's possible you'll look at mine and swear you've seen a different model than this with the same name, and well, you're probably not wrong.

So much variety.

So back to my model. I have always liked the head that appeared skeletal and wide eyed. I guess there was something dramatic about it that just appealed to me more than the parrot headed one. Anyway my plan with these plastic bits was to stick the sword on his side along with anything else that made sense. I was particularly fond of the scroll. The addition of a pair of brimstone horrors will help update and tie this fellow up to the newer range of Tzeentch models.

Plastic LoC bitz

My plan for this thing now is to model him up for The Old World but use him as a Daemon Prince. I think he'll be perfect in that role. Unlike the rest of my Tzeench Daemons, this model will be exclusive to the Old World.

Assembled.

Somehow I have lost his tail. I know it's around here somewhere because I saw it recently, but I will be damned if I can't recall where I put it... *sigh*

Looks like a party hub?

Anyway, I hope to get this guy painted soon but it might be set aside for an upcoming winter project.  We'll see how things shake down...
