Here be Spawn! (Part 1)

While making lists for my Worldeaters I found that I had some points to spend. Most of the stuff in the wh40k 10th edition Worldeater's List are too pricey to crunch into the small to moderately sized games that we like to play locally. Then I found the Chaos Spawn entry with just the perfect amount of points for two of the gribblies,  and I had to give them a shot. Then I realized I didn't have any models for them. -Well, none assembled anyway!  

It turns out I had one in a pile of bits and two in unopened blister packs. These are metal miniatures that came out in the early '00s. I had planned to use them with hopes of getting off a few Fleshy Curse psychic powers during the time when the first 40k 3rd Edition Chaos Codex was current, but I just never pulled it off. 

I had a fun evening assembling two of the things and the next day I went out and primed them in White.

After drying in the spring heat for a few hours I got them inside and painted their bases.

I used Contrast Paint to get them battle-ready. Blood Angel Red was slashed all over these things. The the teeth and bone spikes I used Skeleton Horde.

And that's it, two battle-ready... things. Here is how they scale up next to a Primaris marine.

Later that evening, these Spawn got to join their Worldeaters brethren on the tabletop in a battle against the minions of the false Emperor, but that's a story foe another post.

Note, I have titled this Part 1 even though I have no immediate plans to do more with them. But if I do get the inspiration to paint them up to a higher level, I would like to have the continuity in place for future readers.

Bori the Bloody (Part 1)

Primed and ready.

I had a creative itch the other day. And with a dash of boldness as well. I decided I wanted a khorne specific Daemon Prince, but with my current situation I don't have the disposable income to just go get one. But then I remembered I had a bunch of left over plastic and metal daemon prince parts. So this, kind of stupid, yet also kind of cool, idea was born. 

As I started to tinker away with the assorted parts it became obvious that the most necessary part I lacked was a complete torso, either in metal or in plastic. But I did have the front pieces in plastic.  But I had plenty of other junk that I  might be able to use and fake the rest of it with greenstuff. 

Fitting the bits. 

The growth spurt between the late '90s metal Daemon Prince and the plastic one from last decade is very much apparent. But I had this idea that he was like an old cartoon caricature of a tough guy,: all shoulder and chest and puny legs. Not too physcially different from an ork nob in that respects. 


I scrapped away on the front of the torso so it would join up better with the metal legs. Afterwards I glued the arms to the torso front piece. Slowly my 3-D puzzle was coming together. But I found that it was necessary to pin the plastic torso to the metal legs for added strength.

Next came the big glob of greenstuff. I applied layers of muscle to the back and tried to get the  back to conform to the front. My lack of skill with sculpting is quite obvious here, but what I did accomplish I can live with.

I hid the most egregious errors along the belt line with trophy skulls and a marine helm. And I added a plastic cloth to cover up the tail hole, since I didn't have a tail available to fill in that gap.  Finally I glued this monster to his base and left him propped up on some paint pots for a few hours so the glue could dry and to allow the green stuff to cure more.

After that I sprinkled on some grit to the base. After that dried I took him out with some of his friends  (you'll see them in a future post) for a priming party. Which is the state he is in in the first pic of this post. 


I shared the above pic with some of the guys in our text group and I stated how I was going for the big bruiser with the little legs vibe. Screech responded with this image ( below), which hilariously captures the exact vibe I was going for even though I hadn't thought about this at all during the modeling process (I was thinking about some tough cats from old Tom and Jerry cartoons). He's even got a skull belt buckle!

Worldeaters Terminators

 


One of the biggest misses I thought GW did in recent times was not producing Worldeaters specific Chaos Terminators to support Codex: Worldeaters last year. (Yeah. I am still bitter about that book becoming redundant less than 6 months after it's release!) Trying to convert the Worldeaters khornate bunny ears onto these models has the potential to be challenging and disappointing. I made the choice to not even try it and just see what I could do with just paint. I'm shooting for a Blanchitsu-sque vibe with these guys...

I built these guys pretty much as the instructions recommended with exception to these two guys whom I used left over parts from the Chaos Sorcerer in Terminator Armor I finished a while back. 

This guy's got a snazzy Champion paldron.

I really got into these guys, so much so that I felt compelled to dive right into painting them. I primed them with Chaos Black. The base coats were Khorne Red (appropriate, yes?) And for the filigree I used Brass Scorpion. 


All the skull and bones were picked out with Corax White


Tubes, joints, guns and spikes were all painted with Leadbelcher


Mephiston Red was used as the mid layer for the red armor. 


My old Blood Red was then applied for the top layer on the red. That color is still very much superior to any red that GW currently sells. 


The plasma coil on this guy's combiweapon was picked out with Corax White. I used Pylar Glacier over that, but it seemed a bit too thin. So I went over that again Ultramarines Blue then a final highlight of Corax White.


My new favorite Citadel color has got to be Cryptek Armourshade Gloss. It's great for getting an old rusty look on metal without taking the time I used to spend to get this look. A quick solution, and it works really well.

So I managed to jam out this unit fairly quick. Here they are, done! Decals and all.

For some reason I seemed to have mounted the trophy racks on this model in a way that it seems that this Chaos Terminator wanted the heads to be looking at each it other. This amused me too, so I left it. 


I painted the two Imperial Guard heads that are on two of the trophy racks in the color of my Cadians. The decaying faces were done using a wash of Coachella Greenshade Wash with a layer of Pallid Wyche Flesh


I'm not sure if this is a Mk V or a Primaris helmet. Either way, I thought he should be an Ultramarine. For reasons. 


The decals on their right shoulders are from the new Worldeaters decals sheet that came out with last year's new kits. I like these a lot, and they were not nearly as difficult to work with as some decals like to be. I suspect that I was probably just lucky this time. 



The helmet on this base is a Chaos Space Marine. I decided to make it a Black Legion helmet, since those are my 'basic' Chaos Space Marines. In hindsight I wish I had painted it in Dark Angels colors. 


The Space Marine helm on the Reaper Autocannon model is intended to be a Black Dragon, but he could easily be a Deathwatch marine too I suppose. 


The powder scoring on the tips of the reaper cannon was done using Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil .  I think it came out better than I had expected it would. 


And that's all. Hopefully I will get the Worldeaters on a tabletop sooner than later. And whenever that happens these guys are sure to be joining them. Now if I can just motivate myself to finish the Jakhals...

KHARN!!! (Feeling Khorney Part 12)

 

Now with more skulls!


Recently I took the time to access the state of my Worldeaters force and the most glaring thing to me was that Kharn's base, still on his original 25mm one, was way too small. He was always too big for that base, with his feet spreading over the edges of it. The current plastic kit comes on a 40mm one.  It was simple enough to expand up to this, I just glued him onto 40mm base.

Normally I would green stuff out the edges and try to smooth it out, but I decided to just clutter it up instead. I gathered an assortment of appropriate bric-a-brac: skulls, a space marine helm, a knife, bits of sprue (to look like bricks), a few small rocks and some more skulls. Can't have enough skulls on a Khorne character right?

As expensive as GW plastic is, I try repurpose all my scraps.

Once I was satisfied with my hint of a debris field, I added some grit. Sometime later when all the glue was dried I started the process of painting it. The usual dirt recipe for the grit, a series of greys for the rocks, Skeleton Horde Contrast Paint for the skulls and Macragge Blue for the marine bits. 

I didn't purposely have the skulls on the right-side looking in the same direction. Really.

I highlighted all these bits with usual methods before finally topping it all off with some grass tufts.  Happy with this, I declare this little upgrade project a success.

The Tactical arrow on the busted marine shoulder pad was hand painted.  I just didn't feel like wasting a decal on this considering how obscured the icon is. 


And that's it. I hope to get my Worldeaters onto a table top soon, and hopefully Kharn will be accompanying them.

Worldeaters Master of Executions (Part 3)

And here is the finished Master of Executions. But first let's finish the WIP steps:



After some deliberation I settled on making the helm on the trophy rack a Dark Angel. My usual method of painting DAs was confounded when I discovered that my old Rotting Flesh paint has become a solid lump of plastic. Major bummer. But the lid was cracked and I guess it was a critical breach that allowed the paint to prematurely dry up. So I found a close analog in ) which I supposed will work for now. 

Although the packaging shows the trophy racks on the backpack are supposed to be bones, I decided to paint them as a metallic bronze would look better. And I do think I like it better that way. 

Chaos on Chaos violence is such a lamentable thing.

The two decapitated fellows were a joy to paint. I based the flesh with Cadian Flesh, a thinned wash of Nightshade was put over this followed by a thin layer of Kislev Flesh. Rakarth Flesh was lightly applied next with the slightest highlight of Palid Flesh. Blood For The Blood God was added to the stumps of their necks. 


I absolutely adore the new Worldeaters decals. However I wanted a bit more continuity with my some of the other Worldeaters units in my force. Particularly I always like that icon was showing a world being plundered. With this model I size up the icon using a circle template and colored that circle in blue.


I added a continent and some isles using Dust and a light green. Once dried I applied the transfer with the help of Microset to complete the icon. I think this turned out quite well. 


After a few touch-ups here and there, I put the whole guy together. I added some grass tufts for the final touch and he was done. 

Complete and ready to execute. 

I forgot to mention the final steps on his leathery half-cloak thing; The last highlight is Tau Orange and the stitches were done using a craft paint called Raw Linen by Delta Ceramcoat. 


The decal has a glare to it making it a challenge to photograph but I think you get the drift. 


I am pleased with how the model turned out, I just need to find the time to get this guy into action....
