Primaris Lt. In Phobos Armor

Do I really need another Primaris Lieutenant? (Does anybody?) Well, yeah, I do. This particular guy will fit in nicely with my Reivers as well as the Eliminators unit I constructted alongside this guy. They were finished during the March For Macrage challenge, but this poor chap was sidelined. -Until now!

They're not garters, they're knife straps!"

Of course I basecoated the blue armor using my old Space Marine Blue. I hope I can find another paint pot of this color eventually, or at least a good analog for it.

Let's cut to the chase, since I have shown these steps ad nauseum on this blog  already and I just don't feel the need to be that redundant at this moment.  I pretty much painted him like the examples I've seen in Imperium Magazine and elsewhere, with the exception that I painted his mask red with a white stripe running down the middle to denote his Lieutenant rank. I think this looks pretty cool, even though this might increase the odds of him getting shot in the face. Of course I realized well after the fact that these colors should be inverted, but I like the way this turned out so I'll leave it be.

Finally, the dreaded decal stage.  Thankully this wasn't too problematic and I only used two decals on this model.

And with that stage completed he is done. Normally I would probably add a few grass tufts but I have already packed them away for the move.

And yes my family are moving to new house and everything is in chaos and disarray. Granted I'm not moving far, just 20 acres away, but it's turnng out to be a long drawn out affair which has stopped my hobbying for the time being. Hopefully things will pick back up soon.

Primaris Lieutenant with Stormshield

The first of my March For Macrage challenges is done.

Another Primaris Lieutenant! Can I ever have enough? Does any modern Space Marine player have a enough? Well, I like this guy for his stance and his unique loadout. But it took me awhile to get motivated to work on him. This next pic was taken way back in December.

Primed.

Note that you'll see that I have his shield arm removed for most of these steps as it was just easier to work on the model with it separated. One of the benefits of pushfit models is the ability to do this sort of thing.

Base coats.

This particular stage is a new mixture I tried out as suggested within  Imperium Magazine. The brassy areas were first painted using Retributor Gold.

Retributor Gold on brassy parts.

Next these areas were all given a rather liberal wash of Reikland Fleshwash.

Finally, a highlight of Stormhost Silver, which is my modern analog for my old, but still reliable and still superior, Mitheril Silver. I liked this result and I think I'm going to adapt for the the rest of these Ultramarines.

Stormhost Silver highlights.

After a few touch-ups he was mostly done.

The decals were done using the 'ard Coat method which I think I'm starting to get good at.

Probably the most challenging aspect of this miniature was the painting of the Lieutenant strip on the helmet. It took me a while to get it to a point where I was satisfied with it.

The green glow on the neo-volkite pistol was done using layers of Tesseract Glow and White Scar on the raised bands. Or a white dot in the middle for the front of the gun barrel.

Two variations of grass tufts were used to finish off the model. Tufts are so much more appealing to me on how they turn out and with their ease of application.  I doubt I'll ever go back to static grass and definitely not traditional flock.

As I was taking these pics I had the last second idea to paint the necron skull with glowing eyes. So I colored them in using a dot of Moot Green. Either this guy was just recently beheaded amd he's still shutting down,, or he activated as the Lieutenant stepped over him. Perhaps he's alerting the other Necrons to the Lieutenant's presence?

Well that's a wrap for this chap, keep checking back during March to see how many more Ultramarines I can get knocked out during March For Macrage!

Rest & Recovery Models

A week ago I was released from the hospital  (yay!) But with a lame primary arm. (Boo). You can see more details on all of that in the previous post.. I couldn't paint or draw,  but I could, carefully, build models. As you might be aware, my pile of unbuilt kits is somewhat overwhelming and it's nice to find time to build some of  them even though the circumstances suck. It was relaxing actually and helped take my mind off things.

Primaris invasion!

So what did I build? Well, mostly all of the marines from my Imperium Magazine collection. Starting with a squad of Eliminators. Although technically I haven't finished building them yet as their gums and backpacks cover up a lot of details I need to be able to reach with my paint brush. So I will finish their build-outs as I paint them.

Snipers!

Next came the Primaris Lieutenant in Phobos Armour. I think he'll be a perfect leader for my Reivers. Even though he's not  nearly as terrorifying despite his big-ass knife.

Lt. with scary mask envy.

The next unit that was assembled was  a rather large unit of Infiltrators. I think these models are rather bad-ass and I am very impressed with their poses and details.

Does he  have a wrist mounted ...TV?

"Yeah, anyway where was I?"

Pew pew.

I followed that up with the assembly of a Primaris Librarian with the cameoline cloak. I'm thinking that this guy might be fun to stick with the Eliminators since clearly they shop at the same military surplus outlet.

Librarian Excedrin.

Next came a squad of Assault Intercessors. I was careful to make sure not to use the same head on the Sergeant to distinguish him from the first squad of these guys that I have already built.

Assault Intercessors Squad 2.

While building these guys I happened to review their army list to see that the Sergeant can have a different load out which inspired me to assemble the next squad of Assault Intercessors with a very kit-bashed Sergeant.  His head comes from the Ultramarines  Upgrade Sprue, the thunderhammer is from the old Vanguard kit, and his hand flamer is the classic one from the early '90s Space Marine accessory sprue.  I think I dig him!

"I will set them on fire then beat 'em with my hammer!"

The final guy to be assembled (mostly) during this construction spree was the Ancient. This is the one from the 8th edition launch box that I later found on ebay.  I prefer him over the one that GW currently sells in a claim shell pack. For a guy called "the Chaper Ancient" I thought it made since for him to have a helmet that reflected this concept. Also it's a call-back to the first Ultramarine models my brother I built back in '89 from the classic RTB01 kit. I left his banner detached at this time because I think it'll be easier to paint.

"C"mon gimme a hand."

All of these models will most likely get their own threads and posts here on the Chronicle at some point, either later this year or decade. But for now I'm celebrating getting so many models off of their sprues and frames and upright and sort of playable. Meanwhile, now that my wrist is starting to feel better I need to get back to the drawing board and focus on my 2-D art.

Lieutenant Titus (Part 2)

After the frenzied pace of the holidays and my invigorated art schedule, it's been nice to find a few fleeting moments to revist Titus.  Part 1 was pretty much a declaration of intent and now we're into the work stages.

Basecoats.

...and that's as far as I got before a serious of events derailed me.

Badly.

First the weather knocked out our power for a few days, and without getting into the details of that saga I will just sum it up with that it sucked.

More trees fell then Dark Angels after the Heresy...

Then I had a minor heart attack and spent five days in the hospital. I am home now, but I am out of work, resting, while waiting to see when I am going to have open heart surgery.  It's a difficult time. My primary arm is still recovering from the heart catheter procedure and doing fine things like painting, drawing, etc. causes me pain. Not a fun time huh?

Ouchy.

But hopefully that should pass soon. I don't know when the heart surgery will be, but afterwards I will be out of work for 5-8 weeks. And it's going to be tough! My family started a gofundme to help out*, and I'm not asking for help per se, but if you feel inclined to do so I will be forever grateful.

I hope this year turns around for the better soon...

*Note from Da Masta Cheef:  "Also a word of caution on GoFundMe: the 'suggested tip' at the end is both unnecessary, and does not go to Neverness' benefit. GoFundMe keeps that for themselves on top of the fees that they collect, the sneaky gits!'

Ultramarines Primaris Lt.

Hard to believe that I haven't painted a Primaris Lieutenant yet, huh?  Well, let's fix that!

Fixed!

I have had this miniature kicking around for a few months now and with my current Ultramarines Primaris kick, it seemed like a good time to add one to the team. Looking for painted examples of this miniature I came across this brilliant Ultramarines Primaris Lieutenant from Tale of Painters.  It's freak'n perfect. So I aspired to try to get close to It's magnificence.

Primed.

Basecoats were the old Space Marine Blue, Corax White on the knee pad, skull and head.

Bace coated.

Macragge Blue midcoat and Guillman Fleshwash on the head.

The experiment of using the Guillman Fleshwash over a hand painted Corax White was fun, but ultimately I decided that this did look right for this miniature, so I got out the Cadian Fleshtone, Kislev Flesh and Eldar Flesh (Dry).

Midcoats.

I thought it might be fun to give this guy a bit of a stubble on the shaved parts if his head and face.  I just used two coats of thinned Nuln Oil for this effect and I think it turned out well.

Finished sans decals.

Finally I put myself through the aggravation of applying the decals. These turned out alright also. Once past that step the tufts were applied. I will clear coat this model soon, not worried about chipping so much as I am concerned about the decals flaking off with use.

Finished model.

On a bit of a whim, I thought it would be fun to have my son roll up a name for him using an Ultramarines name generator. This one is from Imperium Magazine. I haven't checked to see if this is the same one from the 8th ed Codex: Ultramarines or not, but I doubt they aren't too dissimilar. Anyway, the name he generated was Philo Vento (Which sounds like a guy Clint Eastwood beat up in one of those orangutan movies). His Hero Title is the Guardian Of Megaria. His Master-crafted Bolter is known as the Deafening End.  Fun stuff. -and it's fun to have so much character in a model that's likely to be chewed up by a Hive Tyrant or sniped by an Eldar Ranger... but here he is, done and out of the queue!
